STORYLINE:
Iraq is holding its eighth energy fair in Baghdad with a focus this year on renewable resources.
Several local and international companies are taking part in the event, which runs from Jan. 29 to 31.
Among the participants is General Electric, which has power project operations across the country and is working with the Iraqi government to help generate cleaner energy.
Iraq's carbon intensity from electricity is one of the highest in the world, said Rashid al-Janabi, the head of GE in Iraq.
It stands at 850 grams per kilowatt hour, according to al-Janabi.
GE and the Iraqi government have held discussions to try and bring "that down to under 60 grams per kilowatt hour," Rashid added.
Repeated wars over the decades have wrecked Iraq’s electricity networks.
Corruption has siphoned away billions of dollars meant to repair and upgrade it.
Some 17 billion cubic meters of gas from Iraq’s wells are burned every year as waste, because it hasn’t built the infrastructure to capture it and convert it to electricity to power Iraqi homes, which experience long hours of power cuts.
Private power generators are ubiquitous in the country, spewing hazardous fumes into homes and businesses 24 hours a day.
